Make A Difference - VOLUNTEER!
Any members of the public interested in volunteering are being invited to the Galway City Volunteer Recruitment Fair in the Galway Bay Hotel on Sunday 28th January between 2pm and 5pm. There will be over 40 charities and community organisations from across the city at the Fair, which is being organised by Volunteer Galway. Last year over 800 people attended the event to speak to organisations about the work that they do and the volunteer roles that they are trying to fill.
This year’s Volunteer Fair is being supported by St. Anthony’s and Claddagh Credit Union, Galway Bay FM and the Galway Bay Hotel.
Speaking at the launch of the Fair, Donncha Foley, Development Manager of Volunteer Galway stated that this was a unique opportunity for members of the public to find out what is happening in their community and see how they can get involved. ‘There will be a wide variety of volunteer roles available to suit people’s own busy schedules. We would encourage people to come along and speak to the charities, find out about the great work that they are doing and how you can get involved and be part of it’.
Councillor and Event Organiser, Niall Mc Nelis also encouraged people living across the city to pay a visit. ‘We have fantastic charities and community organisations in Galway City and volunteering can be a great way to learn new skills and make new friends, while also making a contribution to the valuable work that these organisations do throughout the year’.
Since 2006 Volunteer Galway (Galway Volunteer Centre) has been supporting members of the public to find suitable volunteer roles in Galway City and County through selecting roles on our daily updated list of volunteer opportunities that it advertises on behalf of non-profits and community organisations in Galway.
In the last 10 years, over 12,000 members of the public have used the service wanting to get more involved in their community. Over 260000 roles for over 550 organisations based in Galway have been advertised through the service.
The Volunteer Galway team meets with people to help them choose volunteer roles that match their interests and availability. ‘We are always amazed by the amount of people who come to us with a desire to do something to help others, and we provide a confidential service that gets people doing something that they like and benefits others at the same time’, said Donncha.
